Darwin Harbourmaster Ian Niblock is playing a pivotal role in the response to New Zealand's worst marine environmental disaster after being co-opted into the command team under the terms of an MOU between Australian and New Zealand maritime authorities.
The 47,000 tonne cargo ship Rena is stuck fast and breaking up, having struck a reef off Tauranga, on New Zealand's East Coast. She was carrying around 1700 tonnes of oil, much of which has been spilled along with dozens of her containers.
Captain Niblock joined the command team on day three and is acting as Deputy On-Scene Commander.
As part of the command team, Captain Niblock is responsible for the oversight and direction of around 500 responders, both in the Incident Command Center and out in the field, including operational, administrative, wildlife recovery, salvage and community liaison staff. » Read more
