Vessel Traffic Service goes live

The Darwin Port Corporation has stepped into the 21st Century, going live this week with its Vessel Traffic Service (VTS).

Up until recently, the Corporation’s harbour control consisted of radio contact with large and small vessels, all without any visibility of Darwin Harbour.

The Corporation has, over the past few months, taken positive steps to relocate Control Tower Officers to its Fort Hill Wharf Facilities and provide training on new technology for Port of Darwin Harbour Control that includes digital charts, an Automatic Information System (AIS) and radar capabilities.

Chief Executive Robert Ritchie said, “This is a quantum step in improving safety on Darwin Harbour.  With increases in commercial shipping in the channel escalating to around five and a half thousand movements per year, there was a critical need for state of the art technology to be introduced to ensure the safety of all harbour users and to meet future growth.”
